Read the manifestoThe cycle we’re chasing
We believe running changes how you experience the world. It wakes you up. It changes how you see a city, a coastline, a life.
The placeRun through a place and you start to feel at home in it.
The peopleFeel at home in it and you start to want to protect it. That’s the cycle we’re chasing.
The problemBut here’s the rub: care demands action. So we build the world’s cleanest, highest performing running shoes. Not as a compromise. As an advantage.
The build
Danilo’s note: I laid this page out along hylo’s own manifesto. Place, people, problem, build, then the loop closes and you are back at the start line.

WHY I RUN: GORDON CLARK
For Gordon Clark, running is a priority. As much as food, drink, work. It’s his clarity. This is why he runs:
When do you run?
I like running in high-noon hell and heat just as much as I like a rain run but we don’t get that too often in LA. Originally a phoenix native, 120 degrees Fahrenheit is something I’ve run in before. I figure it is a strength I have that others don’t. I usually run anywhere on a low week in the 50 miles range – a high week is 75-80. I’ve had weeks where I run 170 miles. Not accidental but more a focus thing to see how much I can hammer in a week.
RUNNING IS... THE DAWN
Running has never been a question for Mae Thompson. She begins by describing how her mother used to take her and her twin sister to the park when she was five and, rather than demanding hours of pushing on the swings, they would instead ‘just run’.
“We would run as fast as we could to the hedge and back. Then we’d do it again, and again, until we were worn out. Running has always been something that I’ve just done; I’ve never been good at organised sports or working with a team.”
Finding Purpose with Chester Robinson
Chester Robinson is a London-based runner and founder of RAISE Snacks, delicious, all-natural packets of nutty goodness that combine a mission to fuel energetic lifestyles with a wider ethical concern to better the planet and the people on it.
“Anyway, that’s enough of me banging on about how much I love running!”
WE AREN'T PERFECT. BUT WE ARE IMPATIENT
At hylo, we’re impatient for change. Impatient for a gigantic industry with polluting habits and processes to turn itself around and for fast fashion to slow down. We’re impatient for footwear to reduce its footprint problem and to put our planet over profit. But people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, so it’s important that we own our imperfections and are transparent about how we can improve too.
Why we are impatient?
17th
The vast majority of sportswear products are reliant on fossil fuel-derived materials. Fossil fuels are the number one cause of the climate crisis. If footwear was a country it would be the 17th largest polluter and 90% of shoes end up in landfill with limited end of life solutions.
60 percent
Footwear contributes significantly, with 90% of all footwear products currently ending up in landfill, with global textile waste expected to increase 60 percent annually until 2030. ( Source: The Guardian )
4%
Next to that, the raising and maintaining of animals takes up a lot of resources (land, feedstock, energy and water). Livestock now takes up a shocking percentage of all mammals and birds on earth. With 60% of all mammals on earth being livestock (primarily pigs and cows) while only 4% are wild mammals. That is why we ensure that all our products are vegan.
How are we imperfect?

However, despite all of the above we also believe in running more. Therefore, there is a clear need to create products for runners that last and improve on the current impact that running shoes have on our Planet and that is why we exist.
HOW WE BUILT THE hylo IMPACT
The world doesn’t need more shoes, it needs better ones. But this requires innovation, which takes time, development and years of iteration. Hylo launched in 2020 with one model, the hylo Light. Over the next three years, we continued to develop shoes based on this original shoe, later introducing the hylo Legacy, designed for daily wearing, as well as the hylo Run, for increased durability and performance.
Materials first
The brief
We wanted to make a shoe that could compete with the market’s highest performing everyday running shoes but with a fraction of the environmental impact through the use of biobased material innovation. A shoe that could be your go-to running shoe for everyday training, running a marathon or even an ultra.
We set out by building the brief for a shoe that we didn’t think existed: a daily running shoe that not only provides high performance, but that also utilises biobased materials over petroleum derived plastics and prioritises exceptional design, proving that sustainability doesn’t have to result in compromise.
The design
Once the brief was finalised, we moved into the design phase. At hylo, we create with a materials first mindset, drawing on the backgrounds and expertise of the product team members to create a stand out design using the industry's most innovative performance fabrics.
Our midsole
We worked with a biomechanical engineer to create PureGlide™, our proprietary midsole geometry that was derived from data, ensuring the optimum proportions of neutral stability and increased propulsion. Inspired by textures and patterns within nature, we incorporated tree-like lines into the midsole to contrast against its angular shape.
Our outsole
Inspired by Product Director and co-founder, Jorma, and his background in the automotive industry, looking at car tyres and their ability to displace water, the cutouts between the rubber panels not only reduce weight but also increase traction by dissipating water through the grooves to avoid aquaplaning.
Our upper
We prioritised comfort, softness and support but also wanted to make sure the material and structure was light and breathable. We worked with our supplier on an industry leading material made from castor beans, to create two structures that would provide the desired comfort and soft hand feel but also the performance.
Lab test
Once the design and the materials had been approved on an initial sample, it was at this point we could proceed with a larger sample run for lab and wear testing. This stage is absolutely crucial in validating the performance of our shoe. The hylo Impact was lab-tested at component and finished goods level - meaning each component is fit for purpose and validated against a set of testing criteria. The lab feeds back on whether each component, and the entire product, has passed through enough cycles of abrasion and various other durability, performance and quality tests.
Wear test
Following this, we carried out arguably the most critical test, the wear test. We built out our Champion wear-test programme, ranging from elite to everyday athletes, all racking up varying degrees of mileage with different running gaits and frequency. They provide direct feedback to us on a variety of topics such as cushioning, rebound, comfort, weight, support, feel, look and how the shoe affects their bodies and their running.
Supply chain
Whilst the wear testing was underway, we spent multiple weeks working closely with the factory and our supply chain to optimise the production process, making sure that materials are kept in the loop as much as possible, that sea and land transportation is used instead of air freight and that production waste and off-cuts are re-used where possible. We see this as imperative during the development process to make sure that we have a high level of transparency and close relationships with our suppliers.
Confirmation sample
After two years of research and development, collaboration, highly skilled design and biomechanical engineering, as well as rigorous lab testing, wear testing and sampling, we had made our confirmation sample ready for production. The hylo IMPACT, a shoe that sits (or runs) at the intersection of high performance and sustainability, proving that nature can perform, without compromising on quality, aesthetics and more importantly, your runs.
Our product team is constantly researching and developing ways to improve performance, reduce impact and increase the bio content to eventually eliminate the use of plastic, one shoe at a time.

The carbon number
If you’ve ever looked at our product page you have probably come across our carbon number.
Our numbers differ from product to product but consistently outperform the average running shoe. This number represents the global warming impact: the amount of emissions that are released into the atmosphere during the life cycle of said product, expressed in kg CO2 equivalent (kg/co2e).
We calculate and publish our carbon number in an effort to be transparent about the environmental impact of our products.
This means that the data we use is an indication of our environmental impact and is not 100% representative of the impact of our products. Whilst we do our best to obtain as much information as possible and have made good progress, we currently do not have all the primary data for all of our materials and all the processes involved in the making of hylo products.
We will continue to publish a carbon number for every product we bring to market.
What is an LCA?
A product’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an analysis of the environmental impact of a product during its entire lifecycle. This is split into five sections: global warming, eutrophication, water scarcity, resource depletion/fossil fuels and chemistry. We use standardised tools provided by the Higg Index to gain an objective score alongside each category that can not only help us benchmark our progress but also help you compare our products and others.
When calculating the LCA of a product, all processes and inputs needed to produce that particular product are considered. This includes processes all the way down the supply chain including raw material extraction, as well as dye or post production printing methods used. A cradle to grave approach was taken, meaning that the LCA we conduct includes all stages from the beginning to the end of life of our products.
Raw materials
The impact associated with the cultivation, extraction and production of raw materials.
Finished Goods Manufacturing
The impacts of the different manufacturing processes involved in making and assembling products.
Packaging
The materials that make up our packaging.
Logistics
This includes inbound transportation of the final product from the factory to our warehouses and outbound transportation from the warehouse to our customers or retailers.
Product Care
This looks at customer care and the impact of processes such as washing, drying and number of wears.
End of Use / Duration of Service
These final two steps take into account any repair, rewear or recycle schemes as well as material properties alongside any relevant material claims made.
The scenario we use assumes that the majority of our products end up in landfill. We chose this path for now until we have more accurate data on the paths our products take as well as the uptake of our recycling programme.
The weights of the items for footwear are based on a UK9 and for apparel on a men's medium.
As part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) we make use of the Higg Index and its tools. The Higg Index is a suite of tools for the standardised measurement of value chain sustainability. Developed collaboratively over the last decade by a coalition of brands, retailers, manufacturers, and other footwear, apparel and textile industry stakeholders through the SAC.

WHY hylo BECAME A B CORP
hylo became a B Corp because we believe that business can be a force for good. Because we believe in a better balance between profit, people and the planet.
Being a running brand brings with it a certain degree of competitiveness.
| Governance: | Measuring our overall mission, engagement around our social and environmental impact, ethics and transparency. |
|---|---|
| Workers: | This section is all about how we treat the people that work with us and work for us, both as part of the core hylo team and also within our value chain. |
| Community: | This measures how we operate in areas like diversity, inclusion, charitable giving and supply chain management. |
| Environment: | Our highest scoring category. B Corp measures our management of practices and our impact on the air, climate, water, land and biodiversity. |
| Customers: | Here, companies are measured on the quality of their products and services, our marketing, data privacy, and feedback channels. |
We have to stay on our toes. We have to recertify every 3 years to keep the certification. The certification comes with an expiry date. We have to kick on. The next verification is in 2025, where we are re-assessed to ensure we are still running like the world depends on it.

HYLOOP - GIVING PRODUCTS MORE LIFE
The current model of sportswear is broken.
Brands make things, people buy them and invariably once they can no longer perform they are disposed of, ending up in landfill before being incinerated or offshored. Unfortunately, these products are almost entirely made out of plastic and so can take hundreds of years to degrade, if at all.
At hylo, we believe in a fully circular future where products are made entirely from renewable material sources that can be taken back at the end of their life and remade into new products. Where products are cared for and repaired. Where products are made to last. Where products are made to be remade. A future where we own the journey of our products from beginning to end. That's why we’ve created hyloop.
Welcome to hyloop - the More Life platform. This is our platform for extending the lifespan of our products through care, repair and recycling.
In order to take back our products, we need your help. When you’re done with your hylo products, you’re not really done. Engage with hyloop by tapping your phone on your products hyloop logo to learn how you can give more life to your shoes and clothing.

WHY WE EXIST
THANK YOU.
I’m Michael (the athlete), one of the co-founder's at hylo and in a former life I used to kick a ball around a field for a living.
In 2020, I retired from the beautiful game to go on crazy journey with my childhood best friend Jacob (the brain) - a Cambridge university graduate who for his thesis studied the economics of wildlife.
One thing we didn't account for was how hard building shoes would be and our lack of knowledge was getting in the way. So in 2021 we were introduced to Jorma (the shoe dog). Jorma had spent his life building products and collecting shoes. First with Aston Martin and then with Adidas (but we won't hold that against him).
Since he was a young boy, Jorma had collected football boots and has since become one of the largest collectors in the world. In short he is obsessed.
From 2021-2023, we figured a lot out and then we built IMPACT, our category leading shoe. We've learned a lot in the last 5 years, and now we are a team of athletes and environmentalists, obsessed with creating the highest performing running shoes with the lowest possible impact.
Each day I feel incredibly grateful that I get to do this, so thank you for all your support.

WHERE ARE YOUR SHOES MADE?
Our shoes are made just outside of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. We spent a number of months focusing on building out our supply chain to ensure we have high quality production, the lowest possible emissions and high labour standards. It is our main focus to ensure our supply chain is transparent and puts the planet at the forefront of everything we do. All of our materials are delivered to the factory by road and are sourced as close to the factory as possible so that we can minimise our emissions. We also make sure that we utilise waste from production and re-use any samples that we make.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS VEGAN?
Yes, our products use no animal products whatsoever.
ARE YOUR SHOES MACHINE WASHABLE?
We recommend hand-washing the hylo IMPACT. Using a soapy water solution, brush the upper’s surface until dirt and stains are removed.
